Creator of Industry Standard
Over more than one-hundred-year development, Cadillac has made its fame through series of achievements and firsts in technology and design, among which some even become the standards of luxury vehicle manufacturing industry. The first world standard reputation earned in 1908 when Cadillac won the Royal Automobile Club of England's Dewar Trophy for implementation of standardized production successfully. Then in 1912, it won this trophy again for it is the first to incorporate an electric system enabling starting, ignition and lighting. The complete interchangeability of Cadillac's component parts had allowed it to lay the foundation for the modern mass production of automobiles. At the same time, Cadillac is the first automobile manufacturer to put forward clashless synchromesh transmission system, use electronic ignition system and independent front suspension system, produce the V8 engines in mass and develop the front-wheel drive system and so on. Its achievements in introducing and developing V8, V16 and V-12 also consolidate its position as the standard of the world. During late 1950s and early1960s, Cadillac made several innovations to improve its quality and driving comfort levels and that is why low pressure Freon shock absorber, automatic brakes, first automotive air conditioning system, electronic heated seats system and stereo radio was adopted in design.
During its long history of over one century, Cadillac has built numerous models and among them some are still available and prevalent worldwide. The full-size luxury SUV Escalade introduced in 1999 marked Cadillac's first entry into the SUV market. Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT and Escalade Hybrid were also available in succession. Now, Escalade is in its fourth generation. Deville introduced in 1949 was widely known as a full-size sedan, the largest car in the Cadillac model range at that time. It also was the first vehicle to use pillar-less four-door hardtop, which was adopted quickly by other Cadillac models one year later. CTS as a mid-size luxury and executive car now is in its third generation. "Art and Science" design idea in it helped it to win MotorWeek's Driver's Choice Awards for "Best Sport Sedan" in 2008 and 2009, Motor Trend Car of the Year and one of Car and Drivers' 10 Best cars. While Eldorado as a personal luxury car equipped with self-levelling suspension, lower tire, air conditioning and first all-transistor sign-seeking car radio had been produced through ten generations. DTS or Deville Touring sedan or D-Series Touring Sedan introduced in 2005 was also a very popular full-size luxury notchback sedan.
